The Sisterhood of Man
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1979)
Authors: Kathleen Newland and Worldwatch Institute
Average review score:

1979 overview of women's issues
From the inside flyleaf:
"The role of women is in the midst of profound change all over the world. In this book, Kathleen Newland outlines the dimensions of the change and assesses its impact on economic and social patterns....

"In the framework of seven broad subject areas - legal status, education, health, the mass media, politics, work, and family life - Newland pinpoints specific topics of concern to today's women. The underestimation of women's economic contribution, the effects of birth control on women's health, the growth in numbers of households headed by women, and the gap between women's formal political rights and their real exercise of political power are a few of the topics examined.

"In detailing the social and economic costs of sex discrimination, the book argues that outmoded notions about women are a heavy burden for society. The major challenges of the years ahead, concerning population growth, the provision of basic needs, income distribution, and employment, are all problems that cannot be solved without women's full participation. Leaders have for years ignored the justice of women's claim to equal opportunity; it is becoming more and more difficult for them to ignore its practicality."

This 1979 book is an overview of women's issues from the perspective of a decade when the status of women was being reevaluated. The book was sponsored by the Worldwatch Institute, and the author received funding from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. Interesting from a historical perspective.

The Soldier's Guide Book (Ausa Institute of Land Warfare Book.)
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (April, 1900)
Authors: Raymond K., Jr., Col. Bluhm and James B. Motley
Average review score:

A Good Look At Boot Camp
This text is an excellent guide to parents and would-be soldiers who have enlisted or are wanting to enlist. It examines the boot camp expereince and talks, generally, about Army life after graduation. The boot camp experience is well described and illustrated with photgraphs from recent classes. Some details on materials trained, such as Army Values, and Soldier's Creed are included.

I do not recommend this text for personnel currently serving in the Army since the information is so elementary, it would be of little value. However, I would highly recommend this text to Recruiters who are helping applicants and their parents to understand the Army experience.

Overall, well written and well illustrated with no technical flaws to speak of.

I have reviewed this book before. It had a copyright of 1995. I find the subject matter very useful especially in my professional. I will suggest that Dearborn should keep this handbook up to date so it can encompass new laws and guidelines.

Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Nonequilibrium Complex Systems: NATO Advanced Research Workshop (Santa Fe Institute Studies in the Sciences of Complexit)
Published in Paperback by Perseus Publishing (January, 1995)
Authors: Patricia E. Cladis and Peter Palffy-Muhoray
Average review score:

Survey of pattern formation in complex systems
The book tries to give the overview of spatio-temporal pattern formation in complex systems through a collection of articles. The collection ranges from pure theoretical to pure experimental articles but in overall I find out the book as a useful reference on this new developing field of science. Moreover, I think it should be on a bookshelf of any scientist, who deals with complex spatio-temporal systems. Unfortunately the overall theoretical level of the book is very high with many articles dealing with very specific topics and therefore it may not be useful for beginners or under-graduate students. But, this was not the goal of this book, I suppose.

Stopping Cancer Before It Starts: The American Institute for Cancer Research's Program for Cancer Prevention
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (April, 2000)
Author: American Institute for Cancer Research
Average review score:

A solid, sensible approach to reducing cancer risk.
The American Institute for Cancer Research has long been known as a leader in the field of diet, nutrition and cancer. This new handbook for cancer prevention presents findings from some of the latest research in this field and translates it into practical actions anyone can take for lower cancer risk.

While most of the basic advice may seem fairly common sense (eat more fruits and vegetables, avoid being overweight, stay physically active) the unfortunate truth is that too few people actually practice most of it. This book provides a good insight into the role that various factors, such as diet, exercise and obesity, play in cancer prevention. It combines solid information with practical ideas for making lifestyle changes for lower cancer risk. According to the book, more than 375,000 cases of cancer in just the U.S. could be prevented through simple dietary and lifestyle changes.

The book also provides a wide range of recipes that illustrate how to prepare foods that are not only helpful in lowering cancer risk, but that are also interesting and exciting eating.

No book can lower cancer risk -- that result can only happen when a reader absorbs the advice and makes practical changes. But this book provides a good source of reliable information, plus a lot of very practical advice to help make the process much easier.

Strangers Within the Realm: Cultural Margins of the First British Empire (Institute of Early American History and Culture, Williamsburg Va)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (June, 1991)
Authors: Bernard Bailyn and Philip D. Morgan
Average review score:

A solid collection of essays
The most valuable benefit of this book of several essays is its theme: those on the margins of the British Atlantic world. Covering such groups as the Irish, Scots, Canadians, Indians, slaves and planters of the West Indies, these authors explore peoples typically ignored by standard histories of the British American colonies. (Typically, most studies concentrate on the Puritans, Quakers and planters of the Low Country and the Chesapeake.)

Thelma & Louise (Bfi Modern Classics Distributed for the British Film Institute)
Published in Paperback by British Film Inst (October, 2000)
Author: Marita Sturken
Average review score:

Thelma & Louise Analysis
Sturken's "Thelma & Louise" is an excellent addition to BFI's Modern Classics book series. This analysis of the popular and conroversial film covers several important topics including: the hype and various reactions/criticisms of the film upon its theatrical release, how the film fits into feminist film theory, whether the violence in Thelma & Louise is worse than other films that were NOT criticized for their violence, what genre the film belongs in, Ridley Scott's directorial vision for the film and various motifs, how the characters change and why, what options these women have in a male dominated world, and what the ending signifies. Sturken includes quotes from several articles and interviews.

Thinking About Biology: An Invitation to Current Theoretical Biology (Santa Fe Institute Studies in the Sciences of Complexity: Lecture Notes, vOl)

State-of-the-art perspectives on biology theory
Disregard the innocuous title. This is a fascinating text for those interested in exploring biological theory and the emergence of life from the perspective of dynamical systems. The book contains contributions of 14 authors from all over the world discussing leading edge theory from macromolecules to "evolvability" in complex systems.

deeply intreging
Through a Glass Darkly: Reflections on Personal Identity in Early America is an outstanding resource for entertainment and aquiring knowledge on a civilization that has been long overlooked and misrepresented. This book is for someone looking to better understand the relationship between early American settlers and Native American tribes. What ended in the massacre of the indigenous tribes, began with a peaceful relationship based on trade and commerce.

Trees and Shrubs for the Northern Plains
Published in Paperback by North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies (February, 1996)
Authors: Donald G. Hoag and Institute for Regional Studies
Average review score:

Great book on trees and shrubs for the northern great plains
As a director of the Ag. experiment station at NDSU, Fargo, ND, Donald Hoag is a horticulturist who has spent a great deal of time studying shrubs and trees in the plains region. Given our extreme climate and soil conditions, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who is considering planting a tree, or wanting to identify that bane of a plant in the back yard.

The book is filled with relevant information from cover to cover, including sketches and photographs of plants, leaves and buds. Descriptions of all aspects of trees and shrubs, from disease effects to bark color are described in detail. There is even a section on color, if you want to coordinate your scenery changes by season.

Far from a being strictly a horticultural text, this book will give the everyday Joe the ability to select the proper tree or shrub for their next project either by common name or by species.

This is the best book I've come across on trees and shrubs in our region.
